When German generals wrote their memoirs after the war, they told this fable of “Hitler put us all in jeopardy.” But they’re conveniently forgetting the enthusiasm with which they carried out his plans, and they stayed loyal to the very end. Over 50 people were involved passing the airmen ever closer to freedom. The longest they stayed anywhere was 6 weeks. Over 10 different safe houses were used, the pair sometimes stopping for just a night or in some cases much longer. They liked him when he came to power and started rearming the country because it meant the army got bigger, and suddenly there was room for the promotion of all these officers that are sort of stuck in the 1920s and 1930s. The journey back to England was to take 4 months with McNichol eventually arriving on the 24th June 1944. They liked him when he was a right-wing politician who promised to restore pride to Germany. But he certainly wasn’t responsible for every bad decision that the German Army made and every rotten offensive it undertook and every wrong turn it made, because the generals were at Hitler’s side every step of the way. I’d love to blame Hitler for everything he certainly started World War II, and he’s the author of the Holocaust, there’s no doubt about that. This notion is in 90% of the books written on the war in Europe, which is that every mistake, every wrong turn the Germans made, every stupid offensive they decided to launch, was Hitler’s idea.
